Download videos from Youtube, Google Video and iFilm directly to your computer (and how to convert .flv files to other formats)
Today I feel like progamming a little bit, but although my knowledge in PHP and Javascript is very limited, after a couple of hours working in front of the screen, I have written a code which I consider really useful to many people, because it should allow you to do something that until now you could only obtain with other troublesome methods: Download any Youtube video directly….with no installation of anything (no Grease Monkey scripts), compatible with all operative systems and computers.
I have also added the possibility of download, equally, videos from Google Video and iFilm. And, as an special gift, I explain how to do something quite requested: How to change format of those videos (.flv or .mov) to other types like .wmv, .mpg, .avi or .mov. Here we go.
Download the videos
Note: Remember to add .flv extension to the downloaded file (.mov in iFilm). In order to visualize it, you will need to convert it to other format (as I have explained below), or use an specific FLV files player (like FLV Player) / MOV (like Quicktime Alternative).
Changing videos’ format
Ok, now we have our videos downloaded in .flv format (or .mov), but, for some unknown reason, we need them in .avi, .wmv, .mpg or .mov format. There is no problem at all. There are a few freeware software which allows to realize that function perfectly. The first one is Riva FLV Encoder (download), and this website explains how to use it. The one I recommend is easier, called CinemaForge (shareware without restrictions) and I teach its use with the following flash animation.

If you also want to edit, add titles or special effects to your videos easily (as I do in my Video of the Day section), don’t hesitate about it, your program is Pure Motion EditStudio.

It’s an old clip at ifilm. Use firefox and videodownloader (both updated), and click over videodownloader icon.. the answer is:
Error: Not a valid URL. Visit our web to know in detail what video sites are supported.
Videodownloader at ifilm looks to be a mess at all. If it worked fine some day, its PAST. Needs some re-work to update the methods of download….

I agree, most sites offering a video downloader tool don’t work properly or at all. The tool here has worked just fine for me, sometimes it’s the source URL at fault and not the tool

The extension for Firefox is the greatest thing!
Nevertheless, there are a couple of things I would add if I could:
1) A way to restart the last download, without having to reload the site again. Guba in particular likes to fail frequently mid-file, and it would be nice if you could restart the last download some way.
2) A bulk download would be very cool. You do a search on google or guba or whatever. You have a number of videos you’d like to download. Click the double-icon and it brings up all the page references in a list. You click to select the ones you want, and it does the rest. Auto-renaming to flv. All saved in one place. Etc.

A suggestion: the VideoLan VLC media player (http://www.videolan.org/) also plays downloaded flv movies, and a bunch of other types (without the need to install any additional video codecs). Actually, it plays almost anything.

A Suggesstion,
there is a good website edonkeyzone.com and its easy to download from there (most times the download link on the screen doesnt work) the following is the tag that includes the video file please update your plugin to recognise this if possible

When trying to save a video from break.com in the “just submitted” section all videos get an error like this

I have problems downloading videos from youtube.
I do exactly as you say in the instructions:
‘Copy the link of the page with the video on it and paste it here’
Then I click on download. After that, I go to the download link option (light blue link on the left), I click on the right button mouse to choose ’save link as’
My computer then opens a small menu: ‘Save as’:
I save my file remembering to add the extension .flv
First: ‘File name’ I enter ‘file.flv’
Second: ‘Save as type’ It does not allow me to enter anything here. And it does not give me any choice.
Unfortunately, I save like this: ‘file.flv’ but my computer saves it
as file.flv.htm.
That is why when I open the file, I only see characters and no video at all.
Can anybody help me?
Am I doing anything wrong?

Tengo “video downloader para firefox, pero cuando intento tomar una video de youtube , dailymotion, o otro, no hay nada para teclear. Una frase me dice que ay un problema y tratar otra vez pero hace muchas veces que hay esta problema , sobre todo para dailymoion.

Hi,
Unfortunately it is impossible to save the files with accented characters in filenames (f.e. Japanese)
Accented characters are replaced with underscore.
Try to download any video and put the following while selecting the file name:
TheBlueHearts人にやさしく.flv
the filename changes to
TheBlueHearts_________.flv
Please fix this problem

I have not tried it yet but let me tell you, many TV news websites “protect” their streaming video FOR NO REASON!!! It’s like running a library where I can come in and visit, and read magazines, but I cannot make any copies, and they won’t sell me any magazines, and when they run out of space for new magazines, they throw out the old ones, but they won’t give them away.
If they want to make money they should at least sell and/or license the product. Let’s say you put together a bunch of TV news clips showing the horrors of fires, to encourage fire safety, or showing how little old ladies got scammed, to show little old ladies how to be more careful. The TV stations provide the content for free but try to prevent saving it. That’s IDIOTIC!!!

Firstly i would like to say that this is an absolutely awesome plugin! Thanks for all the work all of you have put in.
I was wondering if there was any chance of adding “www.jonhs.net” to your list of sites you can download videos from? They rank first in a Google search (of the non paying links).
They have a lot of files available through their website but do not host the videos themselves. The majority of videos are actually loaded from Google Video through their website.
Despite being hosted on Google Video, VideoDownloader won’t save the video while on the jonhs.net website. You have to get the video id link from their page source and search Google for the file.
Here is an example jonhs.net video page:

Im having difficulty in saving flash movies from other sites not on your list. It just saves the .”swf” file as a flash object. I thought your software can download any flash animation? Here is an example of the site I wanted to download from:

You claim this add-on will download videos from iFilm. But every time I try, the message comes back saying the URL is not a supported site. Why does it reject videos from iFilm if you claim it will grab them? It works at other sites, but not iFilm.

Guys, I am having a problem here which I didn’t before. My Windows Media Player 11 used to play the movies I downloaded from google via your extension in AVI format. Pornotube has changed there website design and it has also affected the downloading. Sometimes the Downloader sets up the links but wont locate the URL. The other times it says it doesnt work on pornotube, and other times it says service temporarily unavailable. Please help. Thanks.

HOLA: empiezo por las felicitaciones. tu sistema de descarga es fabuloso!!! ahora el problema: no puedo guardar los videos de youtube. Al bajarlos, los abre directamente con el flv player, pero no aparecen en mi pc. Anteriormente usé tu sistema con mucho éxito, se descargaban en mi escritorio ya que al terminar la descarga aparecía el”"guardar a disco”",luego “”aceptar”" y listo.¿podrías decirme qué está pasando ahora, por favor?
