Download videos from Youtube, Google Video and iFilm directly to your computer (and how to convert .flv files to other formats)
Today I feel like progamming a little bit, but although my knowledge in PHP and Javascript is very limited, after a couple of hours working in front of the screen, I have written a code which I consider really useful to many people, because it should allow you to do something that until now you could only obtain with other troublesome methods: Download any Youtube video directly….with no installation of anything (no Grease Monkey scripts), compatible with all operative systems and computers.
I have also added the possibility of download, equally, videos from Google Video and iFilm. And, as an special gift, I explain how to do something quite requested: How to change format of those videos (.flv or .mov) to other types like .wmv, .mpg, .avi or .mov. Here we go.
Download the videos
Note: Remember to add .flv extension to the downloaded file (.mov in iFilm). In order to visualize it, you will need to convert it to other format (as I have explained below), or use an specific FLV files player (like FLV Player) / MOV (like Quicktime Alternative).
Changing videos’ format
Ok, now we have our videos downloaded in .flv format (or .mov), but, for some unknown reason, we need them in .avi, .wmv, .mpg or .mov format. There is no problem at all. There are a few freeware software which allows to realize that function perfectly. The first one is Riva FLV Encoder (download), and this website explains how to use it. The one I recommend is easier, called CinemaForge (shareware without restrictions) and I teach its use with the following flash animation.
How to convert from .flv to other formats with CinemaForge
If you also want to edit, add titles or special effects to your videos easily (as I do in my Video of the Day section), don’t hesitate about it, your program is Pure Motion EditStudio.

Hello:
I’m trying to use Video Downloader on YouTube, and I’m getting this error:
“Error: Not a valid URL. Visit our web to know in detail what video sites are supported.”
But the Video Downloader website says it works on YouTube. What is wrong?

…to be more specific, just to clarify that I am on YouTube, I tried to download from a single YouTube video site and this is the error I got:

Recientemente instale tu extension VideoDownloader 1.1.1 para Firefox v1.5.0.7 y me ha funcionado bastante bien, pero hay un sitio del que no me ofrece link para bajar el video flash, talvez podrias revisar y ver que pasa o implementarlo en el futuro. El sitio es www.delit.net donde podes ver videos de algunas canciones.

im trying to download a video from zippyvideos but it comes up as:

Why am I not getting a dilog box when I click on the video download icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen. I’m using Firefox 1.5.0.7 and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the extention but still can’t get it to bring up the dialog box. I have to copy and past the URL of the YouTube video onto the website page to download the videos. I did have the extention working a while back before I had to reinstlal everyting due to a major HD crash.

No single video from this site does work.
When starting videodownloader a link appears but just downloads a file called “movieplayer.swf” which is not a video file but a kind of own player or “downloader”.

I don’t know how it affects you, but youtube did some maintainance this morning.
After that I tried to get 2 different clips and an error occured, I tried it about 5 times and always the same.
Maybe they blocked the way to get the files. =(
I somehow knew that youtube is going down the drain, when google got it….
I hope it’s not the way I think it is, I just wanted you to know.

I had the same problem as RUTH did with downloading videos with the Motzilla video downloader. When i first downloaded it, it worked fine for about 3 videos but then i got that message.
I had put a restoration point (in theWindows Help section) on my computer before installing Firefox. I went back to that restoration point and reinstalled Firefox and the Video downloader and its forked fine.
Hope this information helps.
If you don’t have a restoration point, try uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it, that might work.

i used to be able to download videos from youtube and other sites using videodownloader. but now, when i save from the link, my computer saves it in .htm format even if i append .flv to change the file type. it saves as “filename.flv.htm”.

It would be nice if you would publish the test.php file so that we can put it on our own servers. It would reduce your bandwidth some if you did that. (or, if it is possible, it would be better to not use PHP at all and make it all Javascript — this would also reduce your server bandwidth)

Uhm, I don’t want to say this, but right now I can’t download anything from www.vidilife.com, because thay have changed the way they put the links on their website.
For example, a video’s link on vidilife will be similar as below :

This kind of url is totally different from the previous one. So you will need to change this Video Downloader a little. Thannks for reading my comment.

hi,
the videodownloader doesn’t seem to work for mtv shows on ifilm. because i’m outside of the US, i can’t even access any video on mtv.com. when i tried to download a video from ifilm for the mtv shows, i received an error message “not a valid url”. the link is http://www.ifilm.com/episode/16979

hi, i used the video downloader page 2 times now,
to download some documentary from google video,
it works great, but… i choose to save the files as avi,
and when the download is finished, and i play the avi files, it seems that the last part of the file is missing.
So the 2 documentaries are missing approximatly 10 minits in the end.
Do you know what causes this?

Youtube did a round of updates last night, and it seems to have broken whatever path VideoDownloader uses to get the files. The specific error is “Call to undefined function: youtube_get() in /home/.decca/javimoya/videodownloader.net/vd/test.php on line 56.”

I’ve been getting less and less out of videodownloader lately.
Now it seems to just not work at all. When I tried to download the following video:

I tried a few other videos, and got the same results.
I’m using Windows XP Pro with all the latest patches.

Hiya,
Basically, putfile just invalidated your downloading links for putfile.com by adding “put” after their most recent links (i.e “got34*put*” rather than “got34″ by itself). The download link either gives a “ERROR” message, loops the download link back onto itself (the download application), allows you to download all 56kb of the framework (minus video) of the page, or gives you a 2kb file which is corrupted.
Still, kudos for making such a great and benificial application, and I hope you can rectify this problem.
