Download videos from Youtube, Google Video and iFilm directly to your computer (and how to convert .flv files to other formats)
Today I feel like progamming a little bit, but although my knowledge in PHP and Javascript is very limited, after a couple of hours working in front of the screen, I have written a code which I consider really useful to many people, because it should allow you to do something that until now you could only obtain with other troublesome methods: Download any Youtube video directly….with no installation of anything (no Grease Monkey scripts), compatible with all operative systems and computers.
I have also added the possibility of download, equally, videos from Google Video and iFilm. And, as an special gift, I explain how to do something quite requested: How to change format of those videos (.flv or .mov) to other types like .wmv, .mpg, .avi or .mov. Here we go.
Download the videos
Note: Remember to add .flv extension to the downloaded file (.mov in iFilm). In order to visualize it, you will need to convert it to other format (as I have explained below), or use an specific FLV files player (like FLV Player) / MOV (like Quicktime Alternative).
Changing videos’ format
Ok, now we have our videos downloaded in .flv format (or .mov), but, for some unknown reason, we need them in .avi, .wmv, .mpg or .mov format. There is no problem at all. There are a few freeware software which allows to realize that function perfectly. The first one is Riva FLV Encoder (download), and this website explains how to use it. The one I recommend is easier, called CinemaForge (shareware without restrictions) and I teach its use with the following flash animation.
How to convert from .flv to other formats with CinemaForge
If you also want to edit, add titles or special effects to your videos easily (as I do in my Video of the Day section), don’t hesitate about it, your program is Pure Motion EditStudio.

Sorry. The video downloader 2.0 does not seem to work on Mac Osx. Any suggestions? All it downloads is an old film I downloaded ages ago all the time regardless of where I am. I am trying to download a streamed film from Myspace at this location:

I just closed all my firefox windows. When I opened them back up the icon was in my firefox (very bottom right corner, a film strip and a floppy disk). I browsed to google videos, found one I wanted, and then I just clicked on the icon. It worked perfectly. Thank you so much!

Got a small problem. When I’m in the “Best Videos” section, every time I try to watch something from Metacafe, it won’t play. I did a copy shortcut from the source link and this is what’s coming up:

It looks like the metacafe address is being duplicated. Don’t know why, hope you can fix it. It’s doing it to me in both Firefox and IE.

I guess you have a problem copying or pasting the URL, because Videodownloader.net works fine with http//www.metacafe.com/watch/178182/slap_that_girl/, which is what I copied to try it.
If you like Videodownloader maybe you should think about installing its Firefox extension to ease your work. Or download some of the other extensions available, which will also prevent the temporary unavailability of the server.

You need to fix the downloader so it parses “video.google.ca” links. Currently it doesnt know how to handle links that contain the ca top level domain.

This would be a great plugin if it actually worked. Clicking the button to download a vid opens that popup, but the “Download Link” button only points to “get_video.htm”. The instructions say “Right Click -> “Save Target As”… Right-click what? and “Paste the Link into your download manager”. What link? The dialogue box lists several and none of them work. Ever. On any page. Oh, and “Save Target As” is Internet Explorer lingo. In Firefox, it’s “Save Link As”. If you’re going to make an extension for Firefox, at least get the terms right. What a waste of time.

Hi, google has recentely opned an italian version of google video, the only thing that changes is the .it instead od the .com but whit videodownloader it doesn’t work, could you add it please?
in addition… I’ve seen the “extension” for firefox… it is possiible to have something similar also in opera… is a simple button, that just need to be dragged and dropped on an opera toolbar –> Videodownloader

Hi, i was using Video Downloader 1.0 with Firefox 1.5.0.4, it was working fine without any trouble to download videos from ‘PornTube (www.porntube.com)’ to FLV format n then play it using the FLV player recommended

There’s still a problem with MySpace vids. They download fine, .flv files, but for some reason nothing will recognise the video part. VLC will play the audio, SMART will transcode the audio, but nothing wants to know about the vid :o(

this ifilm link is correct but your downloader (both plugin and web interface) dont work on it, Can’t seem to get it to work on anything much anymore like youtube also.

Hi Javi Moya, great extension, works on every site that I tried it for so far except for this site:

It says it’s not a value URL. But when you download it, it’s a ~60KB file. Please can you look into this? and add this site to videodownloader? Thanks!

Dear sir,
this downloader is the best available tools for youtube, thanks for such great program. but i found some strange problem with this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqeBceH53pk
The length of this clip is different if i watch it at their site vs the flv file that I downloaded. Seems the downloaded file is broken somewhere in the middle no matter how i try to download it (using IE, firefox, or GetRight).
