Download videos from Youtube, Google Video and iFilm directly to your computer (and how to convert .flv files to other formats)
Today I feel like progamming a little bit, but although my knowledge in PHP and Javascript is very limited, after a couple of hours working in front of the screen, I have written a code which I consider really useful to many people, because it should allow you to do something that until now you could only obtain with other troublesome methods: Download any Youtube video directly….with no installation of anything (no Grease Monkey scripts), compatible with all operative systems and computers.
I have also added the possibility of download, equally, videos from Google Video and iFilm. And, as an special gift, I explain how to do something quite requested: How to change format of those videos (.flv or .mov) to other types like .wmv, .mpg, .avi or .mov. Here we go.
Download the videos
Note: Remember to add .flv extension to the downloaded file (.mov in iFilm). In order to visualize it, you will need to convert it to other format (as I have explained below), or use an specific FLV files player (like FLV Player) / MOV (like Quicktime Alternative).
Changing videos’ format
Ok, now we have our videos downloaded in .flv format (or .mov), but, for some unknown reason, we need them in .avi, .wmv, .mpg or .mov format. There is no problem at all. There are a few freeware software which allows to realize that function perfectly. The first one is Riva FLV Encoder (download), and this website explains how to use it. The one I recommend is easier, called CinemaForge (shareware without restrictions) and I teach its use with the following flash animation.
How to convert from .flv to other formats with CinemaForge
If you also want to edit, add titles or special effects to your videos easily (as I do in my Video of the Day section), don’t hesitate about it, your program is Pure Motion EditStudio.

I’d like to see a FireFox plug-in created that utilizes this service so one doesn’t have to copy-paste into the tool. It’s a great service and I’ll continue to use it no matter what but a Firefox plugin would make it much easier. :)

i’d like to let people know about this programm called cinemaforge that lets you turn the flv videos to all the other formats. If you have a programm called virtual dub and try to open your ex. flv video in it for editing, it tells you that there’s a mistake in the audio encoding, here is the message you get:
VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with standart CBR values during processing for better compatibility. This may introduse up to 0 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. (bitrate: 128.0=0.0 kbps)

Cuando guardes el video has de hacerlo con la extension (.flv)
Si no le pones esa extension al guardarlo, ponsela luego.

I’m having trouble with Video Downloader that I didn’t have before. I can’t seem to download files from eVideoShare like I used to. Here is the error message I get from Video Downloader:

Those jerks at youtube changed things so you cannot download directly. My advice is to use Firefox and copy the file from the firefox cache directory and rename it.

you cannot save PRIVATE videos at youtube any more. Please check this out - they must be inserting some extra code -they do so that you cannot share them anyway..but you could always save them before!

Javi, el programa que diseñaste “Videodownloader” me funcionó estupendamente hasta ahora. No sé qué le estarán añadiendo a los vídeos o si es un “arreglo” que le hicieron a la página como tal para bloquear los “downloads”, pero lo cierto es que ya no puedo bajar vídeos de YouTube.
Ojalá puedas encontrarle el truco y hacerle un “update” a tu versión, de todos modos muchas gracias (por los que sí pude bajar! Ja!).

When trying to download videos originating on Google - VideoDownloader presents 4 alternatives FLV; AVI; and 2 MP4 formats. As I would prefer AVI I have tried downloading in that format. They will not open on any application such as Win Media. Even in Adobe Premier Pro which should support AVI without question the application warns that it “can not open the file - [due to] unsupported compression.”
Any work around for this problem? I have also tried re-naming and adding the .avi extention to the file without any success.

in response to 368, maybe u need some set of codec that supports the avi file you downloaded. it could be VP6, xvid / divX, etc.. not all avi can be played in WM player.

alright folks. ha ha ha ha ha. i discovered that when u play the private videos at youtube, a file is stored at temporary internet files - PLAYER2.SWF. right click on it and select PROPERTIES. The URL will be displayed like the sample below.

Have downloaded flv files from MySpace, but no matter what software I use, these files will not convert to other formats like avi or mpeg? Cinemaforge just throws up a message saying “Video Not Encoded”. The flv file plays fine in flv player

Im SO stuck with this and really dont know how to use it…
Im trying to download videos from youtube…and Ill click “download this link” and it downlads as a file named “get video” and its a swf file cause it wont open with any players….when I try to open with flv player flv player freezes and stops responding…I have NO clue on how to even play these videos let aloen convert them like you all are….lol. Go to the Youtube video you want and copy the URL.
Then go to the Video Downloader page: http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php
and paste the URL, choose the “Youtube” option to the right and click on “download”.
Then, move down the page a little to Download Link and right click your mouse and select “Save Target As”.
Your Save As window appears. Change the file name to “get_video.flv” and the Save as type change to “all files”.
Click on Save and that should save the file in the correct format.
You don’t say which flv player you are using. I use this one:

On point 1, the quality of the MPEG file is dependant on the software you are using. I use Total Video Converter at http://www.effectmatrix.com/total-video-converter/
and the quality of the conversion is really good.
On point 2, I don’t really know, other than I think the size of the picture is limited due to the smaller size of the flv file. Which flv player are you using? I use http://www.martijndevisser.com/blog/article/flv-player-updated
but don’t profess to be an expert yet, just getting into it. If you come across a better flv player, will someone please let me know?

First test the file location where you download that file.
If dont work, try to change the file extension after download file.
if this dont work try it using another program like firefox (if you use IE) or IE (if you use firefox)

I get the same error when I use the URL that is shown as an example.
Some people talk about a right-click to view and view properties. However, someone else correctly pointed out that a right-click provides a popup for “Settings” and “About Macromedia…. “.

For some videos, I can find the file that is placed in cache.
In windows the folder is the “Temporary Internet Files” in your “Local Settings”. In your Temp Internet Files, many of the videos show up as .avi or as .wmv, etc. That makes it real simple to just copy them to another folder and view. However, some of them are not easily located. For those that are, it makes the process easy and there might not be any decoding/encoding/converting from flv to some other format.
In FireFox, it’s in the cache folder under your “Local Settings” > “Application Data” > “Mozilla\Firefox\Profile” > …. drill down to “cache”. In the cache folder all of the files are seemingly random names. In many cases, the video you watch is one of those folders.
Sort by date/time or by Size, and you can locate one that should be the .FLV file of the video you viewed. Simiply add the filetype of .flv to the file and view it in your flash viewer. When you locate the right file, copy it to the location of your desires. :)
You can also simple clean out cache and view the video again, and watch it appear when the video is fully downloaded.
This doesn’t work for all media. However, it can be a fast easy way to grab many, including some that are in shared privately in YouTube.

I found a way to save private videos, but it doesn’t work without flaws. Clear your cache to make things easier, then open up the site with the movie, while the movie is loading you should notice a file that grows increasingly larger with every refresh. Do not let the video finish loading though, if that happens, the file in your cache will disappear. You probably won’t be able to move the file or rename while it’s still loading because the file will be in use. I tried however, to copy the file right before the movie finished completely loading and paste to another folder, which worked, but for some reason the file was only able to accumulate about 2/3 of the total file, so even though I copied the file a few seconds before completion, the file only ended up being around 10 minutes as opposed to the full 14 minutes. I’m hoping one of you guys can build off of this and find a way to get most of the file as opposed to 2/3. thanks

But it seems that Google-Video has changed their Embed-HTML-Code. With the new one it does not work anymore.
Example:

alright folks. ha ha ha ha ha. i discovered that when u play the private videos at youtube, a file is stored at temporary internet files - PLAYER2.SWF. right click on it and select PROPERTIES. The URL will be displayed like the sample below.

Ummm… quick question. I am trying to take the movies I downloaded and changed the format to(.wmv), and put it into Windows Movie Maker. But evertime I try to do it, the computer says:
The file C:\Documents and Settings\Solomon\My Documents\ShakiraRemix.wmv is not indexed and cannot be imported.
I do not know what this means and wish to put the videos in my movie. Can someone please tell me a way to resolve this problem?

I love this tool! But I have a problem when I try to use it to get QuickTime videos from DevilDucky.com (which don’t support the QuickTime Pro right-click to save the movie). Everything seems to work, but when I view the downloaded .mov file, instead of seeing the video I want, it’s always the same short video that just shows the Milk & Cookies logo. Here’s a page you can try it on that shows the problem: ipad video.

Hmm.. is Youtube fumbling on its website? I’ve downloaded a few videos this day but now all of a sudden the Firefox-extension doesn’t work no more. After klicking on the symbol at the bottom of the browser while on the page of the video the videodownloader pops up with something similar to a mySQL warning:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: youtube_get() in /home/.decca/javimoya/videodownloader.net/vd/test.php on line 56
The funny thing is: When I paste the URL of the desired video in the field of the videodownloader on your site, everything works fine….

Hi! Everytime when i try to watch some YouTube video it keeps show the message:
“Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia’s Flash Player. Click here to get the latest flash player.”
But i have JavaScript turned on and the latest version os Flash Player (as i have the latest for Shockwave).
I usually was able to watch the videos, but with no reason they just stopped work.

Hello again… it seems that these MySQL-type errors are only temporary, they occur only once in a while.
But now I have another problem with the Firefox-extension. When I try to download a video from YouTube using the Firefox plug in, the download button is missing and therefor I can’t download.
And the same as it were at the other problem, the download via this site works fine…

Google Video downloads don’t work. You need to parse the headers of the avi file. Could you rewrite Video Downloader 2.0 to automatically do that as soon as the file is downloaded?
