Download videos from Youtube, Google Video and iFilm directly to your computer (and how to convert .flv files to other formats)
Today I feel like progamming a little bit, but although my knowledge in PHP and Javascript is very limited, after a couple of hours working in front of the screen, I have written a code which I consider really useful to many people, because it should allow you to do something that until now you could only obtain with other troublesome methods: Download any Youtube video directly….with no installation of anything (no Grease Monkey scripts), compatible with all operative systems and computers.
I have also added the possibility of download, equally, videos from Google Video and iFilm. And, as an special gift, I explain how to do something quite requested: How to change format of those videos (.flv or .mov) to other types like .wmv, .mpg, .avi or .mov. Here we go.
Download the videos
Note: Remember to add .flv extension to the downloaded file (.mov in iFilm). In order to visualize it, you will need to convert it to other format (as I have explained below), or use an specific FLV files player (like FLV Player) / MOV (like Quicktime Alternative).
Changing videos’ format
Ok, now we have our videos downloaded in .flv format (or .mov), but, for some unknown reason, we need them in .avi, .wmv, .mpg or .mov format. There is no problem at all. There are a few freeware software which allows to realize that function perfectly. The first one is Riva FLV Encoder (download), and this website explains how to use it. The one I recommend is easier, called CinemaForge (shareware without restrictions) and I teach its use with the following flash animation.
How to convert from .flv to other formats with CinemaForge
If you also want to edit, add titles or special effects to your videos easily (as I do in my Video of the Day section), don’t hesitate about it, your program is Pure Motion EditStudio.

youtube is also really simple. just load the video. everything that will be loaded has to be chached somwhere. where? right; in the cache. go to the cache and search the file. change ending to .flv. voila

Matt, when you start the video, just right click it, select “properties” and it will show a long URL ending with
&folderType=null
copy the link and paste it in your browser, remove the above mentioned section and the video shall download.

Is there any way you can try to find a way to add MySpace videos to that list? I would think it would be just as complicated as YouTube to download from MySpace. Hi! I find your download video page very useful, but since you changed the graphic layout, it don’t work anymore for me. I see only the loading image and IE (6 and 7) give me error on line 101, char 3: invalid argument. In Flock or Firefox, instead, it works pretty fine.

I don’t think it’s flv files that give me a problem. Usually, I’m able to covert them into avi, mpegs or wmv with CinemaForge. But, though I’m able to download some of the MySpace Video files, I cannot covert them, nor play them on by flv player. With CinemaForge, it says “Cannot Encode”.

If you could help me find a way to change MySpace FLVs into AVIs, I would really appreciate it. For some reason, every other FLV(YouTube, Google Video,…) can easily be encoded into other formats via CinemaForge, but MySpace Video FLVs must have special encryptions that prevent it from being encoded. I know it’s not impossible, though.

Dejo este comentario para hacer un par de sugerencias.
No sé si serán posibles, pero bueno, ahí quedan.
Creo que estaría genial que pudieses incluir un buscador para todos los sitios a los que haces referencia (doy por supuesto que esto es imposible). Es que como estés buscando algún video y te tengas que poner a mirar si está en alguno…
Otra cosa útil sería que al descargar un video te pusiese la extensión correcta. Me ha pasado alguna vez el descargarme un vídeo de youtube, y como no lo había guardado con la extensión correcta no lo abría el reproductor. Yo ya sé el truco, pero seguro que alguno intenta utilizarlo y se queda en un intento frustrado.

Sobre la búsqueda de videos si es posible.. y no me costaría demasiado trabajo… pues ya podría aprovechar mucho del código que tengo escrito.
Pero el problema es que sería lento… demasiado lento.
Sobre lo de la extensión es imposible…. salvo que me trajera los videos a mi servidor.. y eso no puede ser … (además sería horriblemente lento).
Junto al link de descarga explico que se debe cambiar la extensión… lo pondré en rojo para que no se os pase :-)

A while ago (when you still had the ‘work in progress’ template) it used to be possible to download GoogleVideo videos as avi files… however, this option seems to have disappeared now. Could you add it back please, as avi is a lot more accessible for most people.

lester, when you right click the file to save it will be named like “get_video” when you do “save as…” it will show that name, and on the end you simply add
.flv

It appears to be sourced from Google Video but I can’t find this exact video through Google Video’s search for some reason. So maybe it could be handy if there was a way to support I-Am-Bored.com videos in future? It appears to use a similar code (.cfm) to some other sites after all.

I have been trying to download video clips from Real Player as well as Windows Media Player and the only thing that I get is their shortcut saved. When I tried to save it (from Real Player) I have 3 choices from the player which are: M3U, PLS and RMP, but I would like to have them saved as Divx-MPEG4 into my hard drive. Any ideas? Having MAJOR problems trying to save QUICKTIME clips at evideoshare. First I get “click to run an active x control on this web page ” sometimes i close sometimes i click it.then I copy and paste the url and ALWAYS get the message “[evideoshare.com] Error: Not a valid URL (http://evideoshare.com/view/display.jsp etc etc ”
