Download videos from Youtube, Google Video and iFilm directly to your computer (and how to convert .flv files to other formats)
Today I feel like progamming a little bit, but although my knowledge in PHP and Javascript is very limited, after a couple of hours working in front of the screen, I have written a code which I consider really useful to many people, because it should allow you to do something that until now you could only obtain with other troublesome methods: Download any Youtube video directly….with no installation of anything (no Grease Monkey scripts), compatible with all operative systems and computers.
I have also added the possibility of download, equally, videos from Google Video and iFilm. And, as an special gift, I explain how to do something quite requested: How to change format of those videos (.flv or .mov) to other types like .wmv, .mpg, .avi or .mov. Here we go.
Download the videos
Note: Remember to add .flv extension to the downloaded file (.mov in iFilm). In order to visualize it, you will need to convert it to other format (as I have explained below), or use an specific FLV files player (like FLV Player) / MOV (like Quicktime Alternative).
Changing videos’ format
Ok, now we have our videos downloaded in .flv format (or .mov), but, for some unknown reason, we need them in .avi, .wmv, .mpg or .mov format. There is no problem at all. There are a few freeware software which allows to realize that function perfectly. The first one is Riva FLV Encoder (download), and this website explains how to use it. The one I recommend is easier, called CinemaForge (shareware without restrictions) and I teach its use with the following flash animation.
How to convert from .flv to other formats with CinemaForge
If you also want to edit, add titles or special effects to your videos easily (as I do in my Video of the Day section), don’t hesitate about it, your program is Pure Motion EditStudio.

you can convert FLV formats easily with mencoder.exe.

A ver que me aclare… Acabo de descubrir tu blog (felicidades por el diseño) justamente porque buscaba una manera para bajarme los vídeos del youtube.
No es por chafarle la guitarra a nadie, pero el único mérito es descubrir que existen los php de descarga en cada servidor, ¿no? Enhorabuena, ¿cómo lo hiciste?
Una vez sabido eso, sólo hay que sustituir el URL que mete el usuario por otro prefijado, manteniendo el identificador del vídeo. El código necesario para eso no ocupa más de tres líneas. Vaya, que muy agradecido, pero tampoco hace falta que lo pintes como el reto más difícil de la programación… La duda: ¿por qué montas un php para esto, si con un poquito de javascript le sobra? Además, evitarías la sobrecarga de tu servidor al procesar los POST… Matar moscas a cañonazos, dicen.

the indonewschannel site is fairly easy. just click the file one want and view the html source (IE->view->source), then search for wmv. e.g.
copy everything between the double-quotes after value and append it to http://www.indonewschannel.com.
e.g. http://www.indonewschannel.com/INC_videos/INC_entertainment/musicvideosIndonesia/AgnesMonicaBilangSaja.wmv
then open this link and if media player comes up, just go to file->save as. i don’t know if this will work for all of them, only tested it quickly for one of them.

Hi! After I did all the proceding to download the videos to my computer, and after I used CinemaForge, the video plays perfectly… but I can’t scroll and chose a certain period of it, I mean, I have to watch the whole thing even if I only wanted to see the last 30secs… is there a way to change that? That was a great job. I am getting any video from these sites now.
For guys who are asking for downloading tips from different sites, try these
1. Window media player videos - If you have media player 10, right click on the screen and select properties. The last line, location, if it ends with wmv mpg or anything except asx, could be downloaded by your download manager.
If it is asx, wvx or anything similar, open with notepad and find the line starting with mms: . It could be downloaded by using flashget.
2. Quicktime, Swf ( flash ) and real files - Try urlsnooper. It would give you the media links of files.
Now javi, what I want to ask is how to download the videos embeded in the page. Like, if you try urlsnooper, only swf you get is the player window, not the file itself. One example is sharkle.com
Another problem is the sites which show youtube or any other site video. Youtube provides this code which could embed a player in your site with the video you want. It’s as same as you’ve provided the video of the day page. I could not download a single video. If I try the page source and find the url ( something like this http://www.youtube.com/v/x4qTZZGW6og ) I could not get the link by using the download toolbar.

Buenas. Encontré tu página luego de ver que cuando pones descargar manualmente el archivo y lo abres con un notepad está la dirección, es cuestión de pegarla y guardar el video. Pero es mucho mas rápido con esto. Felicitaciones! Muy buen trabajo.

March 15, 2006 - I have been using your site to download YouTube videos (thank you!). However, today when I right-click and “save target as”, I get the following message:
“Internet Explorer cannot download …ideo.php?video_id=ynxkMjeo1jA from www.youtube.com.
Windows Explorer was not able to open this Internet Site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.”

Thanks for looking at the YouTube problem so quickly!! You’ve posted that it works again, but once it is finished loading (takes a lot longer than before), your webpage freezes and there is no link to right-click and select ’save target as’.

You can also convert the .FLV file format to AVI WMV or MPEG with the ImTOO MPEG convert, although you do have to purchase this program, if you plan on downloading a lot of videos, it is very useful… It also will convert video’s to PSP and iPod format. Good program.

I struck gold when I found this blog! Thanks for your insight, Javi!
I installed CinemaForge to convert .flv files to .wmv. However, my digital media player only plays mp4 files. So, I then converted the .wmv to .mp4. While the video quality is very good, audio quality could be better. I hear little pops and the audio appears to skip in some places. (Anyone else experience this?) Could it be because of all the converting? Is there a good program that would allow me to convert directly from .flv to .mp4?
